Exchange students come from all over the world to Northwest High School. The exchange program is a great opportunity to gain new experiences and make new friends. It’s something that can help people become closer to achieving dreams and get inspired. Emily Sofie Meering discusses her time so far at Northwest
High School.
Where are you originally from?
The Netherlands and Norway.
High School.
Where are you originally from?
The Netherlands and Norway.
What motivated you to apply to become an exchange student?
Well I first got the idea from my 3 older cousins that have done an exchange year before.
They said it was the most amazing year ever! Though for me it was also that I’m closer to
Hollywood/Broadway and in a different place to follow my dreams. I’m a singer-songwriter,
on Spotify with 7 songs now and 2 more coming in about 2 weeks, so I really want to be
100% fluent in English to get there and what better way than living it 24/7?
What does Northwest have that you like?
I really love the extracurriculars because we don’t have any sports or arts at schools, and
being here its just so awesome, because school is also a bonding place to do fun stuff with
your friends.
What is one of your good experiences at Northwest and why?
I’ve had so many, but if I have to pick one, it has to be every time I make new friends,
especially when I met my best friends. They were so welcoming and I’m already sad to
leave everyone in a year.
What are your thoughts about your classes?
I absolutely love them. Though I get to take only the fun classes since this year doesn’t
count for me. In all of my classes people are super nice and I just love to be there. My
favorites are Repertoire Theatre and Concert Choir, and then French and Spanish.
I know you’re a singer, so what’s choir like for you?
Its amazing! One of my favorite classes and I’m learning so many new things, like the hand
signs that I know I’m going to use for the rest of my life. Also, my class and the teacher are
amazing and so nice. I can’t wait to get there and after the hour is done I don’t want to
leave.
What are some things Northwest has that your other school doesn’t have?
Sports, arts, music, choir, theatre, calling teachers by their last names, metal detectors,
police, drills for tornadoes, or shootings, pep rallies, games. It’s different and both are
amazing in their own way
Have you joined any extracurriculars? If so, which ones?
The school musical (Grease). were getting the cast list on Monday and I’m going to
audition for barbershop.
What kind of environment do you feel Northwest is?
I think Northwest has a lovely environment. I love going to school every day. Not the waking
up early part though, school starts way too early here.
Have you conversed with other exchange students at Northwest?
Yes, the three of us hung out a lot! Charlotte from Norway and I travelled here together and
Laurine from the Netherlands and I texted before the adventure started and the three of us
are great friends.
How did you prepare for your year at Northwest?
Well, I met a counselor at the schools that helped me pick my subjects and get enrolled,
he was so nice. We filled out some information, but for the rest the preparations were more
for the year in America itself on getting here, not really for school.
How did you feel about attending a school in another country?
I was very excited to make new friends, because I always love meeting new people. But I
was especially excited to go to an American school to see if it was like the movies, and
surprisingly it’s even better!
How do you feel about graduating from Northwest?
Absolutely love it because I get to graduate before my friends back home and I get to do
everything that was only dreams in movies to me as a kid. Like prom!
Lastly, is there anything you’d like to add?
