Many students dream of attending an Ivy League University, whether it’s for the academic opportunities, the experiences, or just being able to say “Yep! I went to Yale!” One Northwest student who had the opportunity to experience what the Ivy League is like this past summer. Senior Kimora Potter shares her experiences from her summer at Yale Young Global Scholars.
Ok, could you give me an overview of what Yale Young Global Scholars is?
Yale Young Global Scholars is a pre-college program that has a 10% acceptance rate. It
is international. It is in New Haven, like on campus. So, for two weeks we got to experience
what it was like to be a Yale student in our preferred track.

What was your preferred track?
I chose Politics, Law and Economics as my “major” while being there because it’s
something that I’m very passionate about and I’m interested in Political Science.
Are you planning on pursuing a career in politics, law, or economics?
Yes, I’m planning on majoring in political science and accounting.
How did you hear about this program?
I heard about it by searching up pre-college programs and this one just caught my eye.
How was the application process?
The application process was very intensive and rigorous, and very similar to Yale’s
actual application process.
What was one of your most memorable experiences in your time being there?
One of my most memorable experiences was definitely getting ice cream with people
from all around the world.
What is a key lesson or concept that really stuck with you?
A key lesson or concept that really stuck with me is that in spite coming from all different
backgrounds, we were all united by TikTok Brain-rot.
Were there any activities that only your session got to do?
Yes, we had a model UN session where for six straight hours we were in the roles as
real life government officials and we had to make policies and changes, and we could not
break character.

How were you chosen to give a speech?
We had an audition process, and out of 85 students, they had chosen around 10 of us
to give a speech.
What was the topic of your speech?
The topic of my speech was the topic I did for debate nationals this year, and it was
called the notions of niceness, where I talked about the cognitive biases towards
individuals based on our surface-level features.
What are some advantages or benefits a student that attended this program might get
compared to a student that didn’t?
So, you get in-person admissions advice for applying to colleges, and on top of that,
you get really good networking, and it teaches you what it’s like to be an actual college.

What is a piece of advice you would give a student planning on attending this program
next year?
Bring a fan and shower shoes.
How will this program help you succeed in other areas of your life?
It definitely gave me a bit of insight into what it’s like for non-western countries and the
amount of oppression they face.

What were some of the countries people were from?
New Zealand, Nigeria, Greece, Trinidad and Tobago, where Nicki Minaj is from, China,
pretty much everywhere besides Iraq.

Apply, Apply, Apply!! Even if you don’t think you’re going to get in, they do have a
waitlist, so just apply.
